Background: KMSIM provides consultancy services and resource in the insurance and reinsurance markets. All users connect using Terminal Services to multiple servers over a dedicated connection to a hosting facility. By using a hosting facility considerable costs were saved on bespoke infrastructure for a dedicated server environment. However with rising hosting and excess power usage costs, KMSIM management were under pressure to reduce hosting costs.
help4IT undertook detailed analysis of the physical servers, noting the type and power of the hardware platform, operating systems, storage and input/output requirements. help4IT was then able to produce a detailed project plan to virtualise those x86 platforms which were running a Windows operating system. The resulting virtual servers then became independent of the hardware they used to run on.
Physical servers with the most potential for future production use were prepared for the addition of a dedicated virtual operating system. The remaining physical servers were decommissioned.
Virtual servers were then run on the new virtual layers. With careful planning the virtualisation and recommissioning process is relatively quick, producing minimal disruption and a seamless experience for the average user.
After server consolidation KMSIM was able to reduce its rack space and power requirements by 50%. The new virtual servers are hardware independent and therefore KMSIM were able to take advantage of the help4IT Virtual Hot Site Disaster Recovery service for complete peace of mind.
